In this conference given by Steve Geoffrion, the co-director of Trauma Study Center, we learned about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its wounds. The professor taught how to recognize the wounds caused by a traumatic event, how they develop, how to track the evolution of the wounds, how to apply the 5 principles of support after the traumatic event and put in practice the self-care concepts. I learned that while 3/4 of the population will live a stressful event, only 9% of it will develop PTSD. Furthermore, Geoffrion states that a traumatic event is threat to life or physical integrity, it can be lived, witnessed, learned or when the person is repeatedly exposed to the testimony of someone who already suffers from PTSD. Geoffrion also insists on the fact that the behaviours shown by those who suffer from PTSD are normal reactions and emotions to an abnormal situation. To help those suffering it is necessary to provide them with these five feelings : security, a state of peace and stillness, connection to others, efficiency, and hope.
